Celebrating our Glasgow Changing Futures Award with the Hub community.
Glasgow Changing Futures Award for Byres Community Hub!
In November, Byres Community Hub was recognised by the University in the Glasgow Changing Futures category in the 2024 People and Excellence Knowledge Exchange and Innovation Awards. You can read more and see a video from the awards. You can also see a video of Susan collecting the award made by our College of MVLS. This is recognition for all of our Hub community so it was great to celebrate the following day with attendees to our Friday ALISS drop-in including some of the Weekday WOW members who have been such an important part of the development of the Hub.
Hub Mondays in November
- Using the Law for Social Change: for Communities and Activists. Jen Ang, Founding Director of Lawmanity, led a participatory workshop for community organisations and activists on using the law as a tool for social change. No prior experience in using or studying law was necessary. Attendees heard about historical and present-day examples of how people and movements made impactful changes in their communities using the law. They also discussed how to tackle issues that matter to them using legal thinking to support their campaigning strategies.
- The final Hub Monday of the year focused on Self-Care Week 2024. Read about all the self-care themed events and activities which took place in the Hub.
ALISS Drop-in with Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland and UofG Medical School
On Friday 22nd November, the ALISS drop-in featured Gillian from Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, who introduced Health Defence Hubs and offered free blood pressure checks. Due to the success of this pilot, we are going to run more monthly checks in the Hub in 2025. Dr Roslyn Pettigrew also discussed the volunteer patient scheme and we heard from some of the current patient volunteers. This was the final ALISS of the year.
Campus redevelopment community engagement event
Susan spoke at the end of this evening in Wolfson Medical School about Byres Hub and community engagement on the Western Campus. If you would like to keep up to date with the University's campus development plans, please visit the website.
Caring Communities exhibition
In November, we had an NHS themed exhibition ‘Caring Communities: Charity, Fundraising and the Future of the NHS’. This was a visual history of charitable fundraising posters for hospitals in the UK and work from community engagement with research with young people.
Patrick Communiversity ‘Let Partick Move More’
November also saw the start of three information sessions at The Annexe in Partick. The Communiversity team from SHW and The Annexe recruited their first cohort of community researchers, who will undergo training from the end of January.
