A Celebration of Multidisciplinary Research was held at the New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Monday 11 November 2024
It has been just over a year since the Cargill Chair of Geriatric Medicine was re-appointed, thanks to the generous support of the DW Cargill Trust. So, it seemed like an opportune moment to thank the Trust and the many other donors and funders who have supported the clinical research in our School. To offer thanks, and to celebrate the research that our donors have made possible, we ran a showcase event on 11 November 2024 in the New Lister Building Campus.
The current Cargill Chair, Terry Quinn, and the team, presented examples of older adult themed research projects from across the College. The theme of the day was multidisciplinary collaboration and breaking down research silos. Presentations included examples of working across differing settings, including hospital, care-home, primary care and the community; as well as examples of older adult researchers working across clinical disciplines including cardiology, psychology and vascular surgery.
The two keynote lecturers highlighted other ways in which we are breaking down silos. Professor Nele Demeyere, from University of Oxford has worked with Terry on numerous projects and emphasised the importance of cross-institute collaboration; while Professor Graham Ellis, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, discussed how research can shape national policy.
In his welcome address Professor Iain McInnes discussed the vital role that donors have played in supporting the most promising people and the most innovative research ideas. The event proved that we have no shortage of excellent early career research talent or novel research ideas.
