Alan Cameron was recently awarded the Tenovus Scotland Sir Robin MacLellan Travel Award after being unanimously judged the best end of project report for the Preventing Recurrent Cardioembolic Stroke – Right Approach, Right Patient (PRECISE Study). Alan led the analysis of pseudonymised data (hospital and GP records, prescriptions, electrocardiograms, heart monitoring and fatalities) of people admitted to ischaemic stroke in Glasgow to develop a prediction model that identifies people who are unlikely to have atrial fibrillation (AF, an irregular heart rhythm associated with second strokes). Reliable identification of people who are unlikely to have AF after stroke using the prediction model could allow allocation of extended heart monitoring resources to other stroke patients who are more likely to have AF and benefit from increased AF detection rates, anti-coagulant treatment and prevention of recurrent strokes.  If applied UK-wide, it was estimated that a new prediction model-based (personalised) screening strategy would detect 7,350 additional people with AF and prevent approximately 2,300 recurrent strokes annually.
