Three members of University of Glasgow staff have been listed in this year’s Queen’s Honours List.

Vice-Principal of Life Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Professor John Coggins, was appointed an OBE for services to science.

He said of his appointment: “I am delighted to receive recognition for doing a job that I really enjoy. I have, through the Research Councils and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, had the opportunity to help young scientists develop their careers and seek routes for the commercial exploitation of their research. I have also been able to indulge my passion for enthusing young people about science and I am proud that my work with the Scottish Science Advisory Committee has suggested how we can recruit and train our next generation of scientists more effectively. My research has also helped to throw light on how herbicides and antimicrobial drugs work. ”

Dr Azra Meadows, Honorary Lecturer in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology, was also appointed an OBE for services to UK and international community relations.

Dr Meadows said: "I am deeply honoured by the award, which also reflects the University's long-term internationalisation agenda. I am especially pleased because I and my husband Peter have a central commitment to rural communities in developing countries, and to international students in the UK. This, and working abroad with the British Council on international student exchange schemes, and with the wider community in the UK on ethnic minority issues, continue to be enormously rewarding to us both."

William David George, Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, was appointed a CBE for services to medicine.
