Grab a leash and shout "walkies" to your pampered pooches because it’s time to sign up for the 3rd annual Doggy Dawdle, run by Glasgow University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

On Sunday, 22 June, Glasgow’s dog owners will be barking and dawdling to raise funds for the Vet School’s Small Animal Hospital (SAH) campaign, which aims to raise £10million for the brand new facility.

The Dawdle is over a 5km or 10km stewarded route around the grounds of Garscube Estate in Bearsden.

TV presenter Carol Smilie will be heading up the walk with her 9-month old black Lab, Jess. Carol’s late dog, Meg, was saved from cancer in 2007 by the SAH, when they amputated her hind leg and removed the malignant bone tumour.

More than 200 walkers are expected on the day accompanied by 100 dogs. It is hoped that they will raise £6,500 this year, with all the proceeds going to the new Small Animal Hospital, which is currently being built on the Estate. £9,000 has been raised to-date from this event and will go towards the £10million target.

Carol said: “The Doggy Dawdle is a fantastic event for the community to come together with their hairy loved ones and raise money for the Vet School, which is a truly worthwhile organisation. Without the Vet School many treasured pets wouldn’t be alive and loved today.”

With one of the busiest animal hospitals in the UK, the pets and staff have expanded and outgrown their existing hospital building.  The new hospital, due to open in 2009, will be a pioneering world-class centre for veterinary medicine.

It will be a teaching and referral hospital for the 21st century which will also provide students, practising vets and staff with unrivalled facilities.

There will be spot prizes on the day and every participant who completes the course successfully will receive a certificate.
