Victoria Powell's 'Highly Commended' prizewinning essay was based on her experience interning in New York last summer.
Final year History and Politics student Victoria Powell has received a ‘Highly Commended’ prize in the annual ASET Student Essay Competition, write Kirsty Kilgour from UofG's Internship Hub.
Victoria’s essay was based on her experience interning in New York last summer with MJ Boyd Consulting – an opportunity which was provided by a UofG graduate via the Internship Hub.
ASET - ‘The Work Based and Placement Learning Association’ - received competition entries from students across the UK. Congratulations Victoria on your well-deserved win!
Perfect opportunity
Here’s what Victoria had to say about her experience: "My internship not only helped my career prospects but also helped me to mature and develop in character. The memory of moving to New York for a month will be one I will always cherish – it was the perfect opportunity for me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace something completely new.
"New York is full of very ambitious people who have inspired me to work hard and push myself continually. It was great to see first-hand how a former UofG graduate had created and built his own business and life overseas. I hope to be equally as successful in my future and I will make sure to take on opportunities that arise to ensure this happens."
Calling all current students
The Internship Hub still have lots of roles to advertise in the next few months so, if you’re feeling inspired, it’s not too late to secure a summer internship for this year. Here are some words of encouragement from Victoria:
"Through my internship I have learnt to be ambitious. I never would have expected to land an internship in New York but I went for it and was given the position!
"I have also become more confident. I was fairly nervous about working in an office job and graduate environment because it was something I had never done before. Now I know it is not something to fear and it is an easy jump to make."
