Front of the University
The University of Glasgow was founded in the fifteenth century. Two hundred years later it erected new buildings on the High Street which were regarded as some of the finest examples of seventeenth-century architecture in the country. The university eventually sold the land to the railways and moved to the present campus at Gilmorehill. The historic site was destroyed although some features including the seventeenth-century Lion and Unicorn Stair were incorporated in the new buildings.
