Theatre Royal, Glasgow

The Theatre Royal opened at 32 Dunlop Street, Glasgow, on 11 January 1782. 1822 saw a name change to the Caledonian Theatre. The name changed back to the Theatre Royal (initially the New Theatre Royal) following a purchase of Letters Patent (1803) after the destruction by fire of the Theatre Royal, Queen Street, Glasgow, 1829. The theatre moved to 282 Hope Street/77 Cowcaddens Street, Glasgow, in May 1869.  The theatre was bought by the Glasgow Theatre and Opera House Company in1882, by Howard and Wyndham in 1891 and by Scottish Television Ltd for use as studios in 1956. It was then bought by Scottish Opera in 1974.
