Jimmy Logan
This collection of theatre memorabilia includes leaflets, photographs, posters, programmes and scripts; it was built up over the years by Jimmy Logan (1928-2001). This rich collection was purchased by the N. S. Macfarlane Charitable Trust and gifted to the Archive.
The Logan family, our Scottish Theatrical Dynasty, has theatre in the blood. Pa and Ma Logan, - Jack Short and May Dalziel - had a successful singing/comedy duo. The family produced a Broadway Musical Comedy star, a pianist/composer cabaret artist, and a top-class jazz singer.
Jimmy Logan was born James Allan Short on 4 April 1928 in Dennistoun. In Logan we had a comedian, singer, actor, director and lecturer in dramatic studies. He was also a mighty force in keeping alive the Scottish Variety Tradition, protecting its history and the memory of so many grand performers. His saving of memorabilia, particularly that which relates to Sir Harry Lauder, has been of vital importance.
Logan was awarded an honorary doctorate by Glasgow Caledonian University (1994), honoured with an Order of the British Empire (OBE) for "services to Scottish theatre" in 1996, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Socttish Academy of Music and Drama in 1998.
Jimmy Logan died on 13 April 2001.
