The Glasgow Jewish Institute Players were first formed in 1936 by Avrom Greenbaum. The company took their name from the Jewish Institute in South Portland Street, which provided a community centre for all social and cultural activities. They converted the Institute Hall into a small theatre by erecting an improvised stage.
In 1941 the company formed Glasgow Unity Theatre group, with Glasgow Workers' Theatre Group, the Clarion Players and Glasgow Corporation Transport Players. Thereafter they presented a host of Glasgow Unity Productions. After the war the Jewish Players left the Glasgow Unity and concentrated on presenting their own productions.
The 1960's saw a gradual demise of the Glasgow Jewish Institute Players and in 1963 Avrom Greenbaum died. As a tribute to his memory, those remaining in the company re-styled themselves as the Avrom Greenbaum Players.
