1915   As men myght se in my visage.
1916   The arwis were so full of rage,
1917   So variaunt of diversitee,
1918   That men in everiche myght se
1919   Bothe gret anoy and eke swetnesse,
1920   And ioye meynt with bittirnesse.
1921   Now were they esy, now were they wode,
1922   In hym I felte bothe harme and goode;
1923   Now sore without Aleggement,
1924   Now softyng with oynement;
1925   It softnede heere, and prikkith there,
1926   Thus ese and anger to gidre were.
1927   The god of love delyverly
1928   Come lepande to me hastily,
1929   And seide to me, in gret rape,
1930   'Yelde thee, for thou may not escape!
1931   May no defence availe thee heere;
1932   Thefore I rede make no daungere.
1933   If thou wolt yelde thee hastly,
1934   Thou shalt rather have mercy.
1935   He is a foole in sikernesse,
1936   That with daunger or stoutenesse
1937   Rebellith there that he shulde plese;
1938   In sich folye is litel ese.
