Miriam Payne to row over 8,000 miles from Peru to Australia in upcoming Seas the Day expedition

Alumna Miriam Payne will row 8,000 continuous miles in the Pacific Ocean as part of Seas the Day’s The Great Pacific Escapade.
Miriam Payne (BSc 2021) is part of the Seas the Day ocean rowing team, a trio of women preparing to row over 8,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean from Peru to Australia in Spring 2025. The journey, which is expected to last up to six months, will test the endurance and teamwork of the trio as they navigate unpredictable weather, strong currents, and the isolation of life at sea as they row in shifts day and night.
Miriam speaks with UofG, reflecting on her journey since graduation, ahead of her upcoming voyage;
“I first learned to row at Glasgow University Boat Club, and after graduating, I completed a solo row across the Atlantic. That experience inspired me to take on an even bigger challenge, and now, alongside my two teammates, we are preparing for this monumental journey. We know the Pacific will bring many hardships—exhaustion, technical challenges, and the vast remoteness of the ocean—but we’re ready to take them on together, one stroke at a time in our 9.5m long boat.
Our expedition is not just a personal challenge; we are raising funds for The Outward Bound Trust, a charity that helps young people develop confidence, resilience, and life skills through outdoor adventure. It’s an organization whose values align with our own belief in the transformative power of adventure and embracing challenges.
We hope our efforts not only raise funds for The Outward Bound Trust but also inspire others to take on challenges, however big or small, with courage and determination.”
