25 years of the Scottish Youth Parliament: Scotland’s human rights journey
Published: 10 February 2025
Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) tell the story of major policy changes in Scotland over the last 25 years,
Using the Scottish Youth Parliament’s (SYP) values of human rights, political impartiality, inclusion & diversity, and democracy, MSYPs reflect on the journey they want to see Scotland embrace: to become the best place in the world to grow up.
Through equal marriage, votes at 16, free bus travel for under 22s and the incorporation of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child into Scots Law, MSYPs explain the human rights campaigning that made these significant policy changes a reality. They also shared their hopes for the next 25 years of Scottish democracy and what today’s young people tell them needs to change to protect, respect, and fulfil their human rights.
