Prof Marian Scott appointed to the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC)

Three new independent members have been appointed to the Joint Committee - including Prof Marian Scott. The appointments took effect from 15th December 2017 and run for three years.

The JNCC was established in the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act (2006) as a non-departmental public body. The JNCC advises the UK Government and Devolved Administrations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales on UK-wide and international nature conservation.

STEM for Britain

Dr Raimondo Penta will take part in the annual STEM for Britain poster competition to be held in UK Parliament on Monday 12th March. His poster will be entitled “Multiscale modelling and simulations of fluid and drug transport in vascularised tumours”.

Dr Craig Anderson published in “The Conversation”

In early December, Dr Craig Anderson had an article published in The Conversation about the UK’s favourite Christmas song, and a couple of radio appearances to talk about it. School success in the Principal’s Early Career Mobility Scheme

Drs Peter Stewart and Mike Whittaker have been successful in obtaining funding from the Principal’s Early Career Mobility Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to strengthen the University’s institutional partnerships by enhancing research collaborations with key partners.

Dr Michael Watson of the University of Sydney will visit Glasgow in July to visit Peter and continue their work using mathematical models of the brain and retinal vasculature to predict patterns of bleeding in the eye following traumatic brain injury.

Postgraduate student Miss Becky Armstrong of the University of Sydney will visit Glasgow in August to work with Mike to explore the topic of C*-algebras and widen the scope of her PhD work.

SofTMech success with LKAS PhD Scholarship

SofTMech (Sean McGinty, Xiaoyu Luo, Simnon Kennedy) has been successful in securing a Lord Kelvin Adam Smith (LKAS) Interdisciplinary PhD scholarship. The appointed PhD student, Alistair McQueen, will start in October 2018 working on “Frontiers In Revascularisation Strategy: Tailoring Intervention using Modelling and Experiments”. This PhD project is an outcome from a previous project funded by the SofTMech feasibility fund.
