Publication in top Mathematics Journal

Dr Ben Davison has had a paper accepted to the Annals of Mathematics, one of the top journals in mathematics, entitled "Positivity for quantum cluster algebras". Ben explains:

“The paper is on quantum cluster algebras, which are a noncommutative deformation of cluster algebras, which have been of intense interest in algebra since they were introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky in 2001. In particular the paper settles one of the main open conjectures in the subject, by determining that all of the generators of these algebras can be written as Laurent polynomials with positive coefficients.”

School success in the Global Challenges Research Fund

Prof Marian Scott and Dr Claire Miller are part of a team led by Dr Neil Munro in Social and Political Sciences that were awarded £49992 from the University's GCRF small grants fund to deliver a pilot research project on social accountability for sustainable provision of fresh water for domestic use in Tanzania. The purpose is to find out how local behaviour, motivations, and cultural and institutional constraints affect community-based efforts to make water governance institutions responsive to local needs. The project includes Co-Is in the School of Engineering and from the University of Dar es Salaam, Shahidi wa Maji (SwM), Morogoro, Tanzania, and Water Witness International (WWI).

Dr Colin Torney was also successful in a GCRF application entitled “Towards a modern biodiversity monitoring pipeline in Tanzania: Automated machine learning techniques for processing wildlife image data”. The money will fund a research associate to develop deep learning algorithms to automate wildebeest counts from survey images, and fund a training workshop in Tanzania.

Congratulations to Marian, Claire and Colin!

Knowledge Exchange & Public Engagement Awards – a nomination

A team from the School – Prof Adrian Bowman, Dr Ludger Evers, Dr Duncan Lee, Dr Claire Miller, Dr Ruth O'Donnell and Prof Marian Scott – were shortlisted for the 2017 University of Glasgow Knowledge Exchange & Public Engagement Awards in the Best Collaboration (Policy & Practice) category. The nomination was based around the work being done in environmental statistics and epidemiology, covering air and water quality and links to health.

The team were unsuccessful when the results were announced at the Knowledge Exchange & Engagement Conference on Thursday 30th November but it was a great achievement in itself to be shortlisted.

IAA funding success

Some of the SofTMech team – Prof Xiaoyu Luo (PI), Dr Hao Gao, Prof Dirk Husmeier, Prof Nick Hill and Dr Colin Berry (Institute of Cardiovascular & Medical Sciences) – have secured an IAA funding grant of £25,000, with the matching funding from the GSK, which will be used to extend the contract of Research Assistant Dr Wenguang Li, to continue work on mathematical modelling of cardiac amyloid.

Feasibility Grand Challenge Grant success

The EPSRC has awarded funding to the University of Glasgow for the network SECURE. Dr Surajit Ray’s application for the feasibility project entitled “Integration and Evaluation of LoRa Sensor Technology for a Flood Early warning System” was successful and as a result was granted £15,000 towards the project.

Surajit also recruited a postgraduate student with collaborative funding from industry partner Toshiba Medical Visualization Systems (TMVS), Edinburgh. Details can be found at the following link https://goo.gl/JUJ8SP

LMS funding renewed

Dr Misha Feigin renewed the LMS Scheme 3 grant on “Classical and Quantum Integrability”. This LMS network involves research groups at Glasgow, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Leeds, Loughborough and now also in Northumbria. Misha also received a GMJT grant which will help support the Glasgow meeting of the network. The Integrable Systems group will host this meeting on 22nd and 23rd March 2018, which will be devoted to “Frobenius structures and relations”.

Success at the Urban Analytics Data Dive – an update

As reported In the October 2017 newsletter, research Assistant Dr Francesca Pannullo, along with her teammates, came second place at the Urban Analytics Data Dive, which was held at the Alan Turing Institute in London on Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th July.
