School of Mathematics and Statistics Distinguished Lecture Series
Professor Philip Maini from the University of Oxford will visit the School to present the inaugural Sneddon Lecture, as part of the School’s Distinguished Lecture Series. The talk is on “Modelling collective cell movement”. The event will take place on Tuesday 18th April at 4pm in Lecture Theatre 2, Boyd Orr Building.
Third Workshop on Soft Tissue Modelling
From Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th June, the third workshop on Soft Tissue Modelling will take place at the University of Glasgow.
Following successful Soft Tissue Modelling Workshops in Glasgow in 2012 and 2015, this third workshop will continue the research forum for modelling specialists and medical experts to discuss and exchange ideas on state-of-the-art developments and challenges in the field of soft tissue modelling, with particular applications to tissues in the cardiovascular system and tissues affected by cancer.
The workshop is organized and sponsored by SofTMech, an EPSRC-funded Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Healthcare.
SofTMech members are involved in organsing three minisymposia for the CMBE 2017 held from 10th to 12th April in Pittsburgh (http://www.compbiomed.net/2017/). These are:
- “Integrative modelling of soft-tissue mechanobiology” – Paul Watton, Ray Ogden, Anne Robertson, Namrata Gundiah, and Mark Thompson.
- “Biomechanics, Mechanobilogy and Translation in the heart” – David Nordsletten, Dominique Chapelle, Jack Lee, Xiaoyu Luo, Ellen Kuhl, Alfio Quarteroni, and Mariano Vazquez.
- “Biological valve function and dynamics” – Raoul van Loon, Xiaoyu Luo, and Michael Sacks.
Past Events
On Friday 24th March, the School hosted the Rankin Lecture talk by Field’s Medallist Vaughan F. R. Jones of Vanderbilt University. Vaughan agreed to give an additional talk at the SOAR meeting provided he was taken golfing – crazy golf probably wasn't what he had in mind, but was enjoyed by all!
Scottish Operator Algebras Research (SOAR)
On Friday 24th and Saturday 25th March, the School hosted the Scottish Operator Algebras Research Meeting. This operator algebras meeting was one in a series of meetings in Scotland focusing on operator algebras research. The he event was attended by approximately 30 people from across Scotland and the UK, and benefited from external speakers that were visiting the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge.
The Young Functional Analysts' Workshop (YFAW) was held at the University of Glasgow from Wednesday 29th until Friday 31st March and was organised by some of the School's postgraduate students, namley Andrew Monk, Luke Hamblin and Samuel Evington. As well as receiving funding from the School, the workshop was supported by an LMS Postgraduate Research Conference grant (Scheme 8), the Edinburgh Mathematical Society Research Support Fund and the Glasgow Mathematical Journal Trust. Event organiser Andrew said:
"Around 30 students from across the UK attended the workshop, during which there were talks by five invited speakers and a number of students. A wide range of topics were covered including harmonic analysis, complex analysis, operator algebras, quantum groups, mathematical physics, Banach algebras, spectral theory and classical functional analysis. There was also a poster session (with pizza and wine!) which was well received by students and staff.
The poster session was organised by our first year students Dimitrios Gerontogiannis and Mustafa Ozkaraca - thanks to you both for taking on this challenge!
We would also like to thank Prof Stuart White for his support and guidance in organising this conference, Dr Joachim Zacharias for spending time reading our grant applications, and Mrs Chanel McIsaac and Mrs Sharon Mullen for helping us with lots of the administration behind the conference."
