Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation spoke for CENSIS

Prof Marian Scott will be the academic lead for the Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation spoke for CENSIS. CENSIS is a centre of excellence for Sensor and Imaging Systems (SIS) technologies and enables leading industry innovators and world-class university researchers to collaborate.  One of the roles of the spokes are to understand key challenges in this area, to explore the research base and to provide key expertise.

Publication by Peter Stewart to appear in Nature Communications

The paper entitled "Vortex flows impart chirality-specific lift forces" written by TM Hermans, KJM Bishop, PS Stewart, SH Davis and BA Grzybowski is described as follows:

In chemistry, a molecule is considered chiral when it can exist as one of two enatiomers of identical composition but where the constituent atoms are arranged in a non-superimposable mirror image. Using a combination of experiments and mathematical modelling, we showed that chiral objects respond differently when floating on a rotating viscous shear flow, with the enatiomers exhibiting lift in differing directions. This provides a possible mechanism to  efficiently separate chiral molecules.

Liam Watson awarded LKAS Studentship

As part of the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith scheme, Liam Watson has been awarded a a fully-funded, 4 year, interdisciplinary PhD studentship with the project entitled: Convergence, connectivity, and continuity - Topological perspectives for mining novel biological information from ‘omics data.

The PhD project is available under the supervision of Liam and Dr. Kathryn Elmer (Evolutionary Biology). The project, housed in Mathematics, will interact closely with biology, exploring molecular evolutionary patterns through topological methods in data analysis. More information can be found here:
