A University of Glasgow and Scottish Government Delegation stood in a line wearing traditional Zambian attire alongside University of Zambia

School of Infection & Immunity pair Professor Andy Waters and Professor Paul Garside recently supported a high-level visit to Zambia and Malawi by delegates from the Scottish Government International Development Team.

The delegation, which also included Head of College of MVLS Professor Iain McInnes and Head of the IDT Joanna Keating, visited the newly completed Lusaka Blantyre Blantyre laboratory, where they met with University of Zambia officials and the Zambian High Commissioner to the UK.

A collaboration between the University of Glasgow, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) of Malawi and the University of Zambia, the lab will further biomedical research and healthcare research in the southern Africa region.

The group followed up by spending time as the Blantyre Blantyre Research Facility in Malawi, again meeting with government representatives and senior management from KUHeS and colleagues from Malawi University of Science and Technology.

Sii and the University of Glasgow is delighted to continue to support our already strong research and collaborative partnerships in both Zambia and Malawi.

Former Sii Head of School and current Dean of Internationalisation Professor Waters said: “The visit of our colleagues from Scottish Government to the Lusaka Blantyre Blantyre laboratory in Zambia further cements the partnership between the two countries and Malawi in strengthening research infrastructure.

"It was heartening to see such visible support and progress in the short time since the official opening of the laboratory”

Another former Head of School, Professor Garside, who is now an affiliate researcher, said: “[I was] delighted to be present with our partners from UNZA and KUHeS for the visit of Scottish Government International Development representatives to the laboratories, the development of which they have so generously supported.”

Professor McInnes concluded: "It is a pleasure to see the progress already made as we prosper every deeper and stronger partnerships with our friends in Blantyre Malawi and Lusaka Zambia.

"The invaluable interaction with Scottish Government has been vital. These partnerships now provide rich resource for future research and educational initiatives across the College of MVLS and beyond.”
