Exploring Polydoctoring: Insights from Two Recent Studies on Multimorbidity and Care Fragmentation

Care fragmentation has emerged as a critical issue in managing patients with multimorbidity—those dealing with multiple chronic conditions. In a previous blog post, I introduced polydoctoring, a term we’ve developed to describe when multiple healthcare providers treat a single patient with multimorbidity. To investigate this issue, we have published two articles that shed light on the impact of polydoctoring in multimorbid older adults.

Decoding Multimorbidity in India: The IMPEND Project’s Journey

Multidisciplinary team conferences for people with diabetes and multimorbidity in Denmark

In Denmark, a largescale national project study and develop a collaborative practice with multidisciplinary teams for people with multimorbidity and diabetes. Researchers and practitioners from three different university hospitals work together to increase knowledge on how to face challenges of multimorbidity. As the multidisciplinary teams work towards more coordinated and patient-centred care, researchers assess the initiatives and conduct a wide range of supportive studies about diabetes.

As a novice (first year PhD) researcher in multimorbidity my major goals have been to broaden my knowledge of the topic and present some of my early project progress, however it’s not always easy to find conferences that fit. The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) annual research meeting from 30th October to 3rd November in San Francisco, USA encouraged submissions from early career researchers by allowing ‘Work in Progress’ poster submissions.

As we delve deeper into the complexities of managing multimorbidity, my colleagues and I have recently published a study that could offer a new perspective on healthcare delivery. Titled "Measurement of polydoctoring as a crucial component of fragmentation of care among patients with multimorbidity: Cross-sectional study in Japan," this work appears in the Journal of General and Family Medicine and represents a collective endeavor to understand and improve the intricate process of patient care.
