SEISMIC programme: funding opportunity from the EPSRC and NIHR research
Published: 18 January 2024
We think that a multi-disciplinary approach to research is vital for understanding how we can best configure health and care services around the needs of people with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) and provide evidence to support sustainable and effective changes to UK service delivery and outcomes.
- What is the overall goal for SEISMIC and the joint funding/work with EPSRC and NIHR?
The ultimate goal of this joint programme is to improve the lives of people with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC).
The SEISMIC programme is supporting multidisciplinary teams (from the EPSRC and NIHR research communities) to develop innovative engineering and mathematical science approaches to understand how to improve the configuration of health and care services to better take a patient-centred, whole person approach to the treatment and care of people with MLTC.
We think that a multi-disciplinary approach to research is vital for understanding how we can best configure health and care services around the needs of people with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC) and provide evidence to support sustainable and effective changes to UK service delivery and outcomes.
- Is there an overview of the type of projects funded and their aims/objectives?
The commissioning for this large-scale programme is part of a phased approach. Now in the first phase, nine groups have been awarded a total of £1.75million, allowing them to undertake development work to establish specialist Innovation Hubs. Development project funding has been awarded to a range of institutions across the UK and focus on topics such as children living with complex conditions, people living with dementia and older adults with multiple long-term conditions.
- What is the next stage in this funding partnership?
At the end of the development phase, all groups will be expected to apply for a full-scale Innovation Hub. Funding is available for £3-6m per Hub over five years, depending on the scale and remit of the challenge that groups are seeking to address.
We are excited to work together on this challenging area and look forward to seeing the excellent impacts from the funded groups which will hopefully transform care for people with MLTCs.
