Taught student group

Group chairs Eleanor Grieve and Jim Lewsey explain the role of this group in monitoring, reporting and responding to gender sensitive issues within our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes
The IHW Athena Swan undergraduate and postgraduate taught student group monitors, reports and responds to gender sensitive issues in our undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes.
We monitor student numbers, applications, offers, acceptances and degree classifications by gender on an annual basis to allow us to explore gender sensitive issues within the teaching programmes in IHW and to take any appropriate actions to ensure gender equality.
This includes sending an annual survey to all postgraduate taught students to identify any gender-sensitive issues in each cohort. The recommendations this group has made have ensured that students on all IHW programmes receive the same information regarding the support and opportunities available throughout their PGT studies in IHW.
In 2020/21, two student representatives were tasked with finding out students’ thoughts on Athena Swan issues on their programmes. A group of students met and discussed this further. A key recommendation was to hold an IHW Induction session at the beginning of the academic year with all students to discuss equality and diversity. In response to this feedback, we are delighted to be holding our first session next month. The session will focus on familiarising students with IHW, introducing Athena Swan, making students aware of what UofG does to promote equality and diversity and, in particular, we will encourage students to engage with the "Effective bystander" training.
We hope this opportunity will also encourage students to get involved in Athena Swan activities, for example, join a working group or engage with IHW's self-assessment team. This induction session will be held as an online IHW cluster wide event, on 23 November 2021 at 12pm with Jill Pell, Cindy Gray, Breda Cullen and representatives from the working group. An invite will be sent out to all students shortly.
