Career Progression group

What has this Athena Swan working group focused on this year, and what are the priorities going forward?
The Career Progression team supports staff through the promotions process by providing information and dispelling myths around promotion. Our aim is for staff to make informed choices about their career paths.
In the 2023/2024 academic year, we organised activities to support our colleagues:
Promotions Workshop
We held our promotions workshop for early career academic staff, with presentations from the Head of SHW and MVLS staff. This year's workshop was in-person, allowing for discussions and Q&A sessions. An SHW staff member shared their experience with the promotions process.
Data Collection and Analysis
We updated our promotions data for 2019-2023. This dataset includes information on Promotions and Reward and Recognition for non-clinical and clinical staff. We break down this data by gender and full-time/part-time status to identify trends.
Support for ECAs
In February 2024, we distributed an email to research staff in SHW, providing information about the promotions round. We arranged for a senior academic within SHW to offer reviews of applications.
Support for Grade 6 Researchers
After concerns from Grade 6 researchers at the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, we organised a meeting with SHW staff and HR to provide guidance on aligning experiences with criteria.
Cross-Group Collaboration
We collaborate with other Athena Swan working groups, including the ECR, WOWS, and Professional Services groups. Our liaison with the PSS group focuses on developing support and implementing changes in promotions systems for Professional Services Staff.
If you would like to join this group, please contact the chairs, Susan Browne and Daniel Kopasker.
