Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering

The 2nd UK-China workshop on Emerging Technologies (UCET 2017) took place from 7th - 9th August 2017 at the University of Glasgow. The UCET 2017 – Glasgow programme reflected a wide spectrum of research topics on emerging technologies in electronics and microelectronics, communications, photonics, biomedical engineering etc., building bridges between various research fields. UCET was established this year (First edition, June 2017 Chengdu, China & Second edition, August 2017, Glasgow) and has emerged as a unique opportunity for UK and Chinese academics and industries to present their research and explore joint collaborations.

The three day workshop was opened by Prof David Cumming, Head of School of Engineering, University of Glasgow and Prof John Marsh, Dean of Glasgow College UESTC, and had a perfect mix of academic and industrial sessions with multidisciplinary tracks providing something for all the 60+ delegates (30 from China) including students, researchers, academic staff and companies working in the field of emerging technologies. There were 22 invited speakers from 7 British and 4 Chinese institutes and industries. The expert speakers included: Mr Ching Man, Analog Devices; Prof Sandy Cochran, University of Glasgow; Alan Salonika, Royal Society of Edinburgh; Dr Conor Snowden, British Council; Prof Xuefeng Liu, Nanjing University of Science & Technology (NUST); Prof Miles Padgett, QuantIC; Dr Graham Kerr, CENSIS; Lynne McCorriston and Gordon Meiklejohn, University of Glasgow; Prof Christos Politis, Kingston University London; Prof Huabing Yin, University of Glasgow; Prof Yong Liu, Glasgow College, UESTC; Dr Shuai Wang, IOE, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Prof Rod Murray-Smith, University of Glasgow; Dr Zhe Shen, University of Liverpool; Dr Manousos Valyrakis, University of Glasgow; Dr Phil Dobson, University of Glasgow; and Prof Ping Yang, IOE, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Delegates also heard research presentations from students in the CDT in Intelligent Sensing and Measurement (CDT-ISM) and the CDT in Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage (CDT-PIADS).

A poster competition was held during the workshop allowing our visiting Chinese students from UESTC to present their research, culminating in the award of three posters prizes. The social events during the workshop gave delegates a great opportunity for networking, as well as enjoying Scottish hospitality during a very pleasant couple of day's weather. We are now working with other Chinese institutes to share experiences and start planning the next installment of the UK-China Emerging Technologies (UCET) Workshop.
