Sustainable development goals, which describe the key development challenges faced by contemporary socieities, have drawn significant attention from the higher education sector. Many institutions are committed to implementing sustainability as a part of their learning and teaching delivery strategy, focused on boosting the '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development' adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015.  Some universities are addressing sustainability issues in a compartmentalised manner, while others adopt a more holistic approach. Current and future generations of students are and will be deeply concerned about sustainability. This leads to an urgent need to strengthen sustainability in learning and teaching as never before.

The publication of a new textbook, co-edited by Dr Kelum Gamage and Dr Nanda Gunawarhana (Director of Research and International Affairs at Sri Lanka Technological Campus) is therefore extremely timely.
