In the field of Global Englishes, Nicola has been invited to give a plenary address and a workshop at the upcoming JALT conference in Japan in November. Her talks (access via this link) focus on new perspectives for Teaching English as a Global Language and an innovative online network that she has established to facilitate the development of an Online Community of Practice. In December, Nicola has been invited to give a series of workshops on this topic at Leuphana Universität Lüneburg and The University of Tehran in Iran. In February, she has been invited to give talks at Prince of Songkla Univetsity in Thailand. She has also recently been awarded a Chancellor’s fun to continue her work on her online community of practice.
For her work on EMI in higher education, Nicola (Galloway, unpublished) was commissioned by The British Council to conduct a feasibility study to examine the viability and practicability of a ‘British Council Position’ (https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/HE_EME_Perspective_part_2v1.pdf). To provide an evidence base for this perspective, she was also commissioned to lead a team of literature review writers to explore EMI in HE: https://www.teachingenglish.org.uk/sites/teacheng/files/L020_English_HE_lit_review_FINAL.pdf
‘…academics from Oxford University and Glasgow University suggested that the first step was to conduct a major survey of teachers teaching English and full English courses to understand and analyse their needs; that it was also important to have an integrated academic and language support system for students; and that English teachers needed to be more deeply involved in or complementary to the main curriculum.’ (Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator.)
Nicola has also been invited to continue this work with an upcoming talk on an EMI panel at The British Council’s New Directions East Asia 2020 December conference ( https://www.britishcouncil.sg/new-directions/speakers)
In November, Nicola has been invited to be part of a panel to present her research on EMI to the Ministry of Education in Indonesia regarding the role of English in higher education. She will present her online network and the work she is doing with colleagues in Indonesia.
