As part of British Science Week 2025, Blairdardie Primary School in Glasgow hosted an exciting series of workshops designed to inspire young minds and showcase the wonders of STEM subjects. On Monday 10th and Wednesday 12th March, Dr Sabrina Scilletta and Janice Richardson led engaging, interactive sessions for pupils from Primary 1 to Primary 5, marking the school’s first-ever STEM event for its younger students.
The interactive workshops were filled with curiosity and discovery, as children explored medical science using props such as pulse oximeters, stethoscopes, dynamometers, mini lab coats, and safety goggles. The children were very receptive to learning about science, and particularly the heart. The week started with a hand-drawn science poster competition (many thanks to the University shop for the prizes!) allowing younger pupils to express their creativity while celebrating scientific ideas. The excitement continued as students embraced their inner scientists, by dressing up in lab coats and safety goggles! To round off their experience, Primary 5 pupils had the unique opportunity to craft their own origami hearts, following an excellent instructional video by Dr Lizzie Burns and support from Sabrina and Janice.
The event was a fantastic success, sparking curiosity and encouraging a love for science among young learners – an inspiring way to celebrate British Science Week! Many thanks to our generous colleagues for kindly lending us the medical props.
