SCMH celebrated National LGBTQ+ People in Stem Day with Drag Bingo.
National LGBTQ+ People in STEM Day is on November 18th, this year the SCMH Athena Swan SAT Committee hosted a Drag Queen Bingo event to celebrate our LGBTQ+ staff and students. Featuring Glasgow Queens, Shego the Sinner and Latex as our hosts - it was an event filled with raunchy jokes, great pizza, and a beautiful sense of community. The event featured profiles of famous LGBTQ+ scientists around the room showcasing their contributions both to the STEM and to the LGBTQ+ community. The Athena Swan committee is so proud to be able to put on events like this for our school, and we thank the both the Fergusson Bequest and the MVLS EDI Committee for the generous funding to hold this event.
“LGBT in STEM Day won’t fix all the issues, but it will shine a big light on them. We are sure it will start conversations, and that’s so important. Ignorance kills. It is time to stop pretending that the STEM disciplines are not influenced by politics and social changes. Some science might be done in a physical vacuum, but no science is done in a historical one.” - Dr. Alfredo Carpineti, Founder of Pride in STEM
Some quotes from one of our attendees below:
"I really enjoyed both (re)connecting with a broad range of people from MVLS, and the opportunity to celebrate diversity in science."
"Was a lovely event to have on a Monday afternoon, having everyone together enjoying ourselves with plenty of laughter - good for well-being."
"I think even without winning Bingo, the event itself was already a sufficiently entertaining prize for me!"
