Sustainability is becoming an increasing concern for the scientific community and many funding bodies now require organisations to consider and reduce the environmental impact of their research. The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF) awards provide a set of criteria that labs can work towards to improve, and demonstrate a commitment to, sustainable practices.

We are starting a committee to share ideas on how we can improve sustainability across all the labs and offices of SCMH and provide support to each other.

The aims of the committee:

-              Raise awareness of sustainability and share resources

-              Encourage sustainable practices such as reducing waste and recycling

-              Work together to obtain LEAF awards for each of the labs in SCMH

The committee is open to all SCMH staff and students, and we particularly encourage PhD students to join. Ideally, we would like a representative from each research group in the school as this would aid our goal to obtain LEAF awards for each lab. We do not expect a large time commitment from our members, as we understand that many will have busy schedules, and most communication and sharing of information can be done through Teams. Our meetings will be bi-annual and brief (cake provided). If you care about the environment and want to get involved then please contact Gillian Lappin.
