We would like to welcome Kirsty McGinley to SCMH!
"My name is Kirsty McGinley, and I am a new PhD student based in the BHF GCRC. I just received my BSc (hons) in Anatomy from the University of Glasgow. After carrying out a research placement based at the BHF GCRC with Dr Angela Lucas-Herald, between my third and fourth year, I knew I wanted to carry out my PhD at the University of Glasgow within this centre. My particular research interest is the impact of sex hormones on the cardiovascular system.
My PhD is a joint PhD between the University of Glasgow, under the supervision of Professor Christian Delles, and University of Sydney with the main aim of investigating the impact of gender-affirming hormone therapy on the vascular system in transgender individuals. There is evidence to suggest that transgender individuals who receive gender-affirming hormone therapy have a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, however this research is limited due to small sample sizes, lack of appropriate control groups and lack of studies investigating the mechanisms behind this increased risk. I am excited to provide insight into these mechanisms and help address the knowledge gap within an understudied field."
We wish you all the best with your studies.
