Nicola Britton

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as I have realised that many of you will receive emails from me, but we have never met in person.

I am Nicola Britton, the Chief Technician within SCMH. I joined when we were the Dept of Medicine and Therapeutics in 2001 having completed my B.Sc. at the University….I even did my school work experience at Vet School so you could say I do love Glasgow University. Having been grant funded for 18 years, working with Prof Dame Anna Dominczak, Prof Baker, Prof Touyz and a 3year spell in SII with Prof Maizels I was lucky to secure a core funded position in 2019. The following year COVID hit which is the strangest experience of my work life to date, I volunteered to be seconded to the Lighthouse lab at the QEUH rather than be furloughed. I knew instantly that we were in a different work setting, as the army were present for the logistical organisation set up. This experience allowed me to put into practice the many years of research experience and exposed me to the not only meeting other people from across the campus who also volunteered but who I would probably never meet in my everyday life on campus, but also the necessary requirements to run the many COVID samples that were received and processed.

One of the reasons I enjoy my job is there are always new challenges and new people to meet. Currently I am a member of the Career Development team within the School Athena Swan Committee, the Technician Commitment Steering Group and have helped to establish the MVLS Tech Group this year. I am pleased with the progress that has been made to promote the work performed by the Technicians and develop key skills. There is always room for improvement which is why I think it is important to have these groups and to be honest I love meeting people from different areas of the University. While my current role involves liaising with Estates, contractors, Health and Safety procedures,  I find satisfaction in being in the lab, histology and tissue culture procedures mainly.

We have a fantastic team of highly skilled technicians within SCMH …..please get in touch if you would like to know more.
