The Care Home Data Review, undertaken by Scottish Government, the Care Inspectorate (care regulator) and Public Health Scotland was undertaken in response to recognised challenges in the national data about people living in care homes and the need for multi-agency working to address this.

Summary recommendations (https://www.gov.scot/publications/care-home-data-review-summary-report/documents/) were published in May 2024 and September 2024 sees the Working Group meetings starting, with a focus on prioritising recommendations and initiating action to improve data to better support residents and staff.

Dr Burton currently holds an NHS Education for Scotland/Chief Scientist Office Postdoctoral Clinical Lectureship focused on using and improving care home data in Scotland. Her research uses national care home data to explore focused questions around pathways into care homes. During the pandemic she was involved in Scotland-wide analyses of COVID-19 outbreaks in care homes. She has consistently advocated for improvements to data to ensure the visibility of this complex and vulnerable population, to support data-informed approaches to better understand and respond to their health and care needs.

“The pandemic exposed known limitations in core data, I am honoured to be appointed to chair the working group and optimistic about the potential for collaborative working to enable meaningful change to better support people living in care homes.”
