Glasgow Experimental Lab (GaEL)
The Glasgow Experimental Lab (GaEL) at the Adam Smith Business School is an interdisciplinary, state-of-the-art behavioural testing facility designed to conduct ecologically valid and fully controlled incentivised experiments.
Our aim is to conduct highly reproducible and replicable studies on human decision-making processes and to promote experimental best practices that enhance research-teaching linkages.
Participants
Join our participant database at GaEL and start receiving invitations for experiments
Register on hroot to participate in our economic experiments
To register, please click on the link above. Once your profile is completed, we will have your information in our database and will be able to invite you to take part in future experiments conducted at GaEL.
Participation in each experiment is voluntary, and you can decide whether you’d like to take part once you receive an invitation. Typical experiments consist of economic decision-making tasks and surveys which participants complete at their individual computer stations, in private.
For each experiment, you will be compensated for your time and answers, typically by a monetary payment via bank transfer. The exact amount depends on the length of the experiment and can also depend on other factors such as your decisions/actions in economic tasks, decisions of other participants, and luck.

Laboratory
Our lab includes 24 workstations separated by cubicles and 1 experimentalist workstation. Each workstation is provided with an HP Z2 Mini Base Unit G9 and an HP E27m docking monitor with Windows 11 Pro 64.
The lab is also equipped to collect participants’ biometric data. Each workstation can be equipped with a Shimmer3 GSR+ Unit and our Facial Software Recognition Face Reader 9.1 by Noldus.
Research
GaEL plays an important role in fulfilling the vision, values and mission of the Adam Smith Business School. It is a site of interdisciplinary creativity and research for academic staff, students and international collaborators and partners.
Consultancy
GaEL works closely with the Behavioural Insights Consultancy at the Adam Smith Business School to deliver external consultancy projects in accordance with the GaEL policies.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
- Who can register to participate in the Glasgow Econ Lab (GaEL) studies?
- In principle, any UK resident who is 18 years of age or older can register to our participant database and take part in Glasgow Experimental Lab (GaEL) experiments. Note, however, that experiments will typically be conducted in person, in our lab. No special prior knowledge is required.
- Is participation in the experiments compensated?
- In each session, each participant will earn a show-up fee of £5, which is the minimal payment. The total average payment, however, will be significantly higher. The exact total amount a participant will earn depends on the duration of the experiment. In addition, the payment usually depends on the participants' own decisions and sometimes also on other factors, e.g., the decisions of other participants or luck. Therefore, we cannot be more specific about the level of payment - but it is so high that most experimental participants are happy to take part in our studies repeatedly.
- Why have others received invitations to the experiment, but not me?
- Invitations are usually sent to randomly selected participants from the subject pool. However, some studies may target specific groups of people based on the needs of the experiment.
- If I am invited to participate in the experiment, am I required to attend?
- You certainly do not have to accept the invitation. However, once you have confirmed your participation, it is very important to participate in the experiment on time, as failing to do so may reduce your chances of receiving future invitations.
- What should I do if I cannot attend the experiment?
- If you cannot make the start time for an experimental session for any reason, please ensure that you deregister online at least 24 hours before the start of the experiment. If you fall ill within 24 hours before the experiment or are unable to attend due to exceptional circumstances, please notify us at asbs-gael@glasgow.ac.uk as soon as possible so we can arrange a replacement participant.
- Why should I take part?
- To earn a reward (typically a monetary payment), take part in cutting-edge research and support our scientific community with your participation!
