On 23 August 2024, a distinguished delegation from Peking University School of Economics visited the Adam Smith Business School to explore and discuss a range of collaborative opportunities.

The discussions were productive and reinforced existing ties between the two schools, opening exciting new opportunities for collaboration, particularly in the areas of learning and teaching, and research. These initiatives will bring significant benefits to both students and staff, fostering a globalised academic environment and enhancing the international reputation of both institutions.

The visit, led by Cui Jianhua, Secretary of the Party Committee of Peking University School of Economics, marked a significant step in deepening the relationship between the two esteemed institutions. Accompanying Secretary Cui were several notable academics, including Professor Xuezheng Qin, Vice Dean of the School; Professor Yunxiao Xu, Dean of the Peking University Institute of Urban Soft Power; and other prominent professors and directors.

Dr Xiang Li, Associate Director of Development, welcomed the guests and chaired the meeting. Dr Belgin Okay-Somerville, School Director of Internationalisation, highlighted the School’s internationalisation priorities and shared updates on ongoing initiatives. Professor Xuezheng Qin, Vice Dean of Peking University School of Economics, provided an overview of their school’s recent developments.

Representing various workstreams within economics were Professor Sai Ding, Professor Luis Angeles, Professor Soner Baskaya and Dr Wenya Cheng, who discussed ways to enhance the current undergraduate student exchange programme and explore new avenues for collaboration. These included opportunities for PhD and staff mobility, articulation agreements, and joint research and workshop series.

Following Professor Eleanor Shaw, Head of School’s visit to Peking University in April, this visit reinforces our strategic partnership between the two institutions. Given that Peking University is ranked 14th globally by QS in 2024, this collaboration represents a crucial development for the Adam Smith Business School, particularly as China remains a key market for the school and the broader university.
