How Marking Rubrics Can Enhance the Learning Experience

Presenters: Dr Thomas Anker, Dr Sarah Honeychurch

The Management subject area has recently introduced marking rubrics for all honours courses in an attempt to make assessment criteria clearer in advance of assessment. The pilot has been followed up with a student survey and the evidence clearly documents that students find the consistent use of marking rubrics to enhance their learning experience and clarify expectations around assessment. In NSS 2018, Management made significant improvements in the area of assessment and feedback, in particular with regards to the questions about making marking criteria clear in advance of assessment and perceived fairness of assessment. The use of marking rubrics is likely to have played a vital role in this improvement. Thomas Anker, Head of Management, will present the marking rubric project and briefly discuss different types of rubrics. All participants will have the opportunity to create a rubric for one of their own courses in order to gain hands-on experience. Paul Karlsson-Brown, Lecturer in Management, will share experience from her own use of marking rubrics, asking students to self-assess their work with the marking rubrics.
