Short Description

This course provides an introduction to the research process, philosophical underpinnings, research design and critical appraisal.

Timetable

This course is made up of lectures and tutorials in semester 1.

 

Assessment

Students will submit a 3,000 word critical review of research methodologies. (all ILOs)

Course Aims

This course aims to consolidate and extend students' knowledge of the research process to enable students to critically engage with research literature. This course aims to prepare students to effectively utilise and contribute to the scientific literature and promote evidence based practice.

 

Formulation of a research question, study design, evidence hierarchies and critical appraisal will be explored.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

1. Systematically evaluate scientific literature that is relevant to address a well-defined, contemporary healthcare issue/ problem.

2. Critically appraise a range of research designs and methods, considering their purpose and application.

3. Critically evaluate the applicability of study results/ findings to clinical and academic practice.

4. Create a well-defined research question with reference to a structured framework.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
