Two recent graduates of the University of Glasgow’s Creative Writing Masters and the Department of English Language's Historical Thesaurus have been shortlisted for a major book prize.
Eleanor Thom and Jason Donald have been shortlisted for the Saltire Homecoming Literary Awards Scottish First Book of the Year for their books The Tin-Kin (Duckworth, 2009) and Choke Chain (Jonathan Cape, 2009) respectively.
The Historical Thesaurus of the Oxford English Dictionary (Oxford University Press, 2009) has been shortlisted in the Research Book of the Year category of the Saltire Awards. The awe-inspiring work, which took 45 years to complete, contains nearly 800,000 meanings, organised into more than 236,000 categories and subcategories collected together in 4,500 pages in two volumes.
The winners of the prestigious Saltire Awards will be announced at a special awards ceremony at the National Library of Scotland on St Andrew’s Day. Prizes will be presented by the Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution, Michael Russell MSP.
Mr Russell said: “Scotland boasts a rich and wonderful literary heritage. The shortlist for this year’s Saltire Society Literature Awards demonstrates the strength of the creative talent in our country today. How fitting that we will recognise and celebrate Scotland’s literary greats on St Andrew’s Day – our national day. I am looking forward to being involved in the ceremony and meeting with some of our finest talent.”
