The University of Glasgow and Leukaemia Research Fund have joined forces to organise a charity Bikeathon this Sunday, to raise funds for a major research centre at Gartnavel hospital. The new centre will house world class researchers who will be working to find a cure for Leukaemia.

Along with the 'Wan Wheel Warrior' unicyclist and a 72 year old bike doctor, Graeme Obree, world cycling champion, will also be saddling up to be part of the ongoing fundraising events. Graeme, also known as 'The Flying Scot', holds the one hour record on a bike that he designed himself with parts of a washing machine. Keen to raise funds for the cause, Graeme will also be taking his wife along with him on Sunday.

With 420 applicants already signed up and more expected to arrive on the day, it is hoped this year's sponsored Bikeathon will beat last years total of £33,000. The funds raised by the event will add to the £1.95 million total already pledged taking the centre closer to the £2.25 million target.

Entries will be accepted on the day, before the start time of 10am at the Information Caravan in Kelvingrove Park, priced £5 for children and £10 for adults. Children must be over 7 years old, and all under 16's must be accompanied by an adult. All entrants receive a t-shirt in their entry pack, refreshments on the day and a commemorative medal at the finish line.
