National Coming Out Day: Rainbow Office Hours
Published: 10 October 2024
These sessions provide a unique opportunity for staff and students to discuss LGBTQ+ issues with an LGBTQ+ member of staff. Open to all levels and from all Schools and Colleges across UofG, Rainbow Office Hours are drop-in sessions, meaning no prior appointment is necessary, and they can be attended in-person, online, or in a hybrid format.
Twice a year, the UofG staff who identify as LGBTQ+ hold Rainbow Office Hours, coinciding with LGBT History Month in February and National Coming Out Day in October to mark the occasions. These sessions provide a unique opportunity for staff and students to discuss LGBTQ+ issues with an LGBTQ+ member of staff. Open to all levels and from all Schools and Colleges across UofG, Rainbow Office Hours are drop-in sessions, meaning no prior appointment is necessary, and they can be attended in-person, online, or in a hybrid format, ensuring accessibility for everyone. Importantly, you do not need to identify as LGBTQ+ to attend these sessions; they are open to anyone interested in discussing LGBTQ+ issues.
In addition to these specific events, many LGBTQ+ staff members are available throughout the year during their regular office hours to support students from all levels and Schools. This initiative, which began in 2019, has contributed to creating a more inclusive campus environment. It offers a safe space for LGBTQ+ community engagement, challenging traditional professional identity boundaries, and promoting visibility and representation.
The impact of Rainbow Office Hours extends beyond individual support. It underscores the need for broader institutional backing for LGBTQ+ identities and advocates for integrating LGBTQ+ perspectives across academic disciplines, emphasising the importance of representation and inclusion.
In summary, Rainbow Office Hours at UofG offer a valuable platform for fostering an inclusive and supportive campus climate. They provide opportunities for meaningful dialogue, professional growth, and community engagement, reinforcing the university's commitment to diversity and inclusion. Whether you are a staff member or a student, these sessions are an excellent opportunity to connect, share, and support one another in a confidential and welcoming environment.
11th October is observed worldwide as National Coming Out Day and to mark the occasion LGBTQ+ staff across UofG will be holding Rainbow Office Hours.
Rainbow Office Hours are an opportunity for you to talk to an LGBTQ+ member of staff, although you do not have to identify as LGBTQ+ yourself to attend. Rainbow Office Hours are drop-in and will be in the strictest of confidence. A list of staff and times/dates is available via Sway (UofG login required).
