As part of the Scottish Technical Conference 2025, taking place on Tuesday 10th June 2025 at Bute Hall, University of Glasgow, we are inviting entries for the Technician Poster Competition and Technician Image Competition. These competitions provide an excellent opportunity to showcase and celebrate the technical contributions of staff across various disciplines.

Winners and runners-up for each competition will be announced at the conference, with high street vouchers awarded as prizes. Judging will take place on the day of the conference.

 

Technician Poster Competition

The Technician Poster Competition aims to highlight the unique and innovative contributions of technical staff, whether in research, teaching, career development, collegiality, or impact.

Rules

  • The maximum poster size allowed is A1 (594 × 841 mm).
  • Participants must attend the conference to present their poster.
  • Joint posters may be submitted, but one individual must be nominated to present the work and answer questions.

Judging Criteria

  • Clarity of submitted material.
  • Novelty and originality of the content.
  • Visual impact of the design.
  • A panel of judges will evaluate the posters at the conference.
  • Winners will be announced at the end of the day.

Submission Deadlines

  1. Intention to submit a poster – Email confirmation to MohammadAli.Salik@glasgow.ac.uk by Friday 18th April 2025.
  2. Final poster submission – Submit an electronic PDF version by Friday 23rd May 2025 to MohammadAli.Salik@glasgow.ac.uk. Posters will be printed for display at the conference.

Once we receive your ‘Intention to submit a poster’ email, we will advise you whether your place is confirmed or in case you have been placed on the reserve list. The conference organisers will get your poster printed and displayed on the day.

 

Technician Image Competition

The Technician Image Competition seeks to capture and celebrate the work of technical staff. Entries can focus on facilities, objects, activities, or people that represent the essence of being a technician.

Submission Guidelines

  • Images must be submitted digitally, but high-quality scans of artworks are also acceptable.
  • Each submission must include a title and brief explanation.
  • One submission per participant is allowed.
  • Images previously published can still be entered.
  • Images must be high resolution (TIFF or high-quality JPG preferred) for printing purposes.
  • Watermarks, names, or identifying marks must not be visible on the image itself.
  • If post-processing (e.g., digital alterations) is applied, it must be described in the image caption.

Submission Deadlines

  1. Intention to submit an image – Email confirmation to MohammadAli.Salik@glasgow.ac.uk by Friday 18th April 2025.
  2. Final image submission – Submit the final image and description by Friday 23rd May 2025.

Judging Criteria

  • Creativity and originality.
  • Visual impact and composition.
  • How well the image represents technical staff and their contributions.
  • A panel of judges will select the winning entries.

 

Copyright, Permissions, and Liability

Copyright and Permissions

  • Entrants must be the copyright holder or have permission to submit their work.
  • Copyright remains with the entrant, but the Universities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee, Strathclyde, and West of Scotland reserve a non-exclusive right to use winning and shortlisted images and posters for promotional purposes, including online, social media, and print materials.
  • The universities will credit copyright holders where possible.
  • Entrants must ensure they have third-party permissions if required (e.g., for identifiable individuals in images).

Liability

  • The universities are not responsible for third-party misuse of submitted images or posters.
  • The universities reserve the right to exclude entries that do not meet quality or ethical standards.
  • Judges’ decisions are final, and no correspondence regarding results will be entered into.
  • The universities reserve the right to modify competition rules, deadlines, and prizes at their discretion.

Final submissions must be emailed by Friday 23rd May 2025.
