Congratulation to our two MSc students who have made it through to the UK finals of FameLab, the International Science Communication competition. Participants have just three minutes to win over the judges and crowd with a scientific talk that excels for its content, clarity and charisma.
Hannah Bialic (left), who is doing an MSc in Immunology, was the winner of the Scottish heats while Erka Robinson, doing an MSc in Brain Sciences, was runner-up.
They will both go on a residential training weekend with experts from Sci Comm and the media. The UK final is in London on April 25. One UK winner will go on to the international heats in which 26 countries compete.
The judges of the Scottish heats were: Prof Bonnie Steves (Director of the Graduate School at Glasgow Caledonian University), Derek Shirlaw (Glasgow Science Centre and Glasgow City of Science), Dr Catriona Pagliari (Consultant Radiologist) and Ken MacDonald (BBC Scotland Science Correspondent).
Cheltenham Festivals produced the first FameLab in 2005. A partnership with the British Council since 2007 has seen the competition go international, with more than 9,000 young scientists and engineers participating to date.
