Sarah Ward Research Assistant and PhD student Sarah Ward has won the prestigious Lucy Cavendish Fiction prize from Cambridge University.

Sarah’s manuscript ‘Resurrection, Port Glasgow’ beat 385 other entries to scoop the top prize.

The annual Fiction Prize is open to unpublished female authors; aged 21 and over and many winners have gone on to secure major book deals. The judges looked for writers who combine literary merit with ‘unputdownability’.

Sarah gained an MLitt in Creative Writing from UofG in 2010.

Sarah said: “I am so shocked. I read the other entries and thought there was so much talent there. I did not expect to win for a single moment. It is an incredible encouragement and I’m just so happy people want to read my work.”

Sarah’s entry was inspired by her grandfather’s work as a plumber in Glasgow’s shipyards and focuses on the life of artist Stanley Spencer.

She began developing the ideas for Resurrection, Port Glasgow during the MLitt Creative Writing programme.
