Second year Engineering students have been challenged to design a proposed plan for the new Engineering building that will be constructed on the former Western site.
The task was undertaken within the Structural Design Project 2 course and the building brief was loosely based on the new Engineering Building that is due to be built as part of the Univeristy’s campus development project.
Students were provided with notational spaces for exhibitions, teaching spaces, research labs and office spaces and were required to carry out the structural design and calculations, architectural design and environmental strategy for the building.
The project was designed in order to engage students with the design of the new building and to collate ideas of what students would like to see within the new build.
Project lead Fiona Bradley, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering, said: "We've had some fantastic ideas from the students, particularly in the areas of sustainability and environmental strategy, and we believe the success of this project has been the opportunity to enthuse students by including them in a real-life project building design project.
"It's very important to us that we engage with students during the design process and that our final design has some of these student ideas peppered through it."
Ann-Caterin Reissmann, a second year student involved with the project, said: "Students are going to be occupying this building and I think it is very important to have student input considered and this project was a great way of listening to our thoughts.
"For me, the environmental strategy was the most integral part of this project. The building will stand for years to come and we have the opportunity to showcase excellent environmental engineering that will make it fit for the future."
The Engineering Building will feature on the former Western Site.
