Glasgow University have celebrated 25 years of Erasmus with staff and students in attendance.
The event was hosted by Glasgow City Council in the City Chambers and marks the European Erasmus Programme’s 25th anniversary. Over 200 students and staff attended the event which was jointly organised by the University of Glasgow, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, Royal Conservatoire and the Glasgow School of Art.
Since it started Erasmus had allowed the study abroad of over 200,000 students in Britain alone. Anyone studying in a Higher or Further education institution across the UK at undergraduate level can apply, providing their institution supports the scheme. Applicants are then assigned a partner University to study at for a period of between three months and one year.
Erasmus counts towards students’ academic course in their home countries, and so allows young people to travel without having to defer from their studies as well as improving their language skills. Candidates are awarded grants and, if attending one institution for a full academic year, will have their tuition fees waived.
There are now 33 countries who take part in the programme designed to increase student mobility in the European community.
