Adult and Continuing Education (DACE) is holding a one day event, “Astronomy Through the Ages in Glasgow”, for anyone with an interest not only in Astronomy but more generally the stories of the University and the city of Glasgow, and the links between them.

Dowanhill Observatory c.1850 Astronomy has been taught in the University since its foundation in 1451. The story of Glasgow's astronomers, involving several colourful figures, some noteworthy, some notorious, will be told. Histories of seven observatories will be outlined, including Dowanhill which transmitted GMT to the city. A concluding tour will take us to artefacts (clocks, etc.) at Gilmorehill related to the local history of Astronomy.

As well as affording a particular perspective on many aspects of the University's evolution, of the working lives of its staff over the centuries, and of the city more widely, this day school will also provide local slants on big stories, e.g. Astronomy's role in the regulation of time.
