Sir Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director of the Carnegie Hall, New York, will kick start a series of Glasgow Lectures on Culture at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. He will speak about funding of the arts in Europe and America. He has recently intervened in debates about the role of philanthropy as against public expenditure.

Sir Clive, who began his career as a cellist in the London Symphony Orchestra, will give the lecture on Monday 21st November 2011 at 6.00pm in the Strathclyde Suit of the Royal Concert Hall.

After playing with the London Symphony Orchestra for eight years, Sir Clive became its Managing Director, a post he held until his move to the Carnegie in 2005.

The Glasgow Lectures on Culture are a joint initiative between the University of Glasgow and Glasgow Life.  The series seeks to create a new space for critical reflection on future directions in the arts and creativity, twenty one years after Glasgow’s term as European City of Culture.

The organisers are pleased to offer complimentary tickets to members of staff and students that wish to attend. Please contact Samantha Emanuel of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research - samantha.emanuel@glasgow.ac.uk - who will be the point of contact for drawing up a guest list.
