Professor Naveed Sattar has been awarded the prestigious Minowski Prize, by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD).

The Minkowski Prize is given by the EASD in recognition of research by scientists under the age of 45, normally residing in Europe, as manifested by publications which contribute to the advancement of knowledge about diabetes mellitus

Professor Sattar was commended for: “…the vision and imagination to re-examine old problems and existing datasets in novel and imaginative ways…resulting in a truly remarkable output of influential and highly cited clinical papers.”

Naveed Sattar graduated in medicine at Glasgow in 1990 and is currently Professor of Metabolic Medicine. He conducts research on biomarkers and predictive pathways relevant to diabetes and cardiovascular risk and participates as lead or co-investigator in a number of related clinical trials.  He is also involved in trials of lifestyle management to prevent or manage obesity-associated risks. He has published more than 300 papers and received a number of national awards, including the RD Lawrence Lecture by DUK.  

He trained in clinical biochemistry and with the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention (WOSCOPS) group, and currently leads the metabolic medicine group in the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, within the BHF Glasgow Cardiovascular Centre.

The Minkowski Prize honors the name of Oskar Minkowski (1858-1931), a physician and physiologist who was the discoverer of the role of pancreas in the control of glucose metabolism.  It has been awarded annually since 1966 and the winner is invited to deliver the Minkowski Lecture, normally the opening address of the EASD Annual Conference attracting an audience of around 5,000.
