The University of Glasgow is launching a partnership with the family of the late iconic Glasgow artist, Hannah Frank; the university is to sell Hannah Frank prints, cards and books with proceeds donated to the university.
The partnership will launch on Tuesday 12 April at the University’s Visitor Centre, from 12 noon to 2 pm where Hannah Frank mounted prints, books and cards will be on display, and University staff, students and visitors will also have a chance to meet Hannah’s niece, Fiona Frank. There will be ten per cent off all prints, cards and books during the launch
Hannah graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1930 with an MA in Arts. She was born in 1908 in Glasgow’s Gorbals, the oldest of four children. While at the University she also attended evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art where she developed her distinctive, black and white style, which has been likened to the Mackintosh sisters, Jessie King, and the Art Nouveau movement. Between 1927 and 1932 the GUM, the Glasgow University Magazine, rarely came out without a drawing by 'Al Aaraaf', Hannah’s chosen pen name.
Her drawings, and her later sculptures, were exhibited in the Royal Glasgow Institute, the Royal Academy, and the Royal Scottish Academy. The University’s Hunterian gallery has several examples of her drawings and sculpture, as do Glasgow Museums at Kelvingrove, and the Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh.
Fiona Frank, the artist’s niece, said: “We are delighted to enter into this partnership with the university my aunt loved so much and with which she had such a long relationship. She was active in a number of Glasgow University organisations and met her husband, Lionel Levy, through the University’s Jewish student rambling association. A five year tour of her work ended at the University of Glasgow Chapel in a retrospective exhibition which started on her 100th birthday, 23rd August 2008. She died just four months later. She would be very pleased to know that her work was on sale here.”
In 2009 Hannah Frank became the first person ever to receive a posthumous honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow.
She was also honoured with a posthumous Lord Provost’s Award from Glasgow City Council for her special contribution to the visual arts through drawing and sculpture.
