IntroductionThe Special Collections department holds thousands of items relating to the Victorian era (broadly defined on these pages as the period ranging from 1800 to 1910), and covering a wide variety of subjects. Nineteenth century material is found in many of the collections, but there are some which contain stronger holdings of Victorian material than others. The Murray Collection for example is particularly useful when looking at the economic and social development of Scotland in the 19th century, the Dougan Collection contains a wealth of early photographs which vividly illustrate the Victorian period, while the Novel Collection is an outstanding resource for nineteenth century fiction, including many examples of triple decker novels. There are several search methods available when looking for nineteenth century material in Special Collections:
