For open book online exams that consist of 50% multiple choice questions (MCQs) and 50% short answer questions (SAQs), the SAQs are vulnerable to misuse of GenAI. In response, the SAQ section was converted into an extended MCQs (eMCQ) that consist of multi-part MCQs (3-7 MCQs) all centred around the same scenario and focussed on the application of knowledge rather than recall of knowledge like simple MCQs. The eMCQs were more robust against genAI misuse than simple MCQs and students performed at similar level to closed book SAQs.
