Windows 11 upgrade

UofG managed devices

Standard Staff Desktops (SSD) and MyDevice

There are two steps to the upgrade process:

1. Download of files

You’ll receive a Windows update notification to first download the necessary files onto your PC or laptop.

  • You will have the options to Pick a time (you have the option to defer for three days, before it happens automatically), Restart tonight or Restart now

This process may take several hours to complete, depending on network connection and hard disk space however, it won't prevent you from using your PC or laptop while the files download in the background.

2. Installation of upgrade

When the files have downloaded, you’ll receive a Windows 11 update setup notification on your PC or laptop.

You will not be able to use your PC or laptop during the installation.

  • You will have the options to Pick a time (you have the option to defer for three days, before it happens automatically), Restart tonight or Restart now
  • It is recommended that you pick a time outside of your normal working hours to complete the upgrade. Or use a second device, if possible, to continue working
  • Once the upgrade is initiated it could take up to 24 hours to complete. You will not be able to stop or interrupt it and the device may restart several times.
  • SSD laptops only: after completion of the upgrade, please log in to your device via VPN, using SBL (Start Before Login) to ensure all files have been applied
